Super Bowl XLVI – Wednesday, February 1, 2012
(on getting to Tom Brady) “That is the game plan. That is the easiest way to stop the play before it even gets off the ground, so we trust our coverage, we trust the guys that are behind us, but we want to get to him first.”
(on defending the Patriots running game) “I think they set it up well with their pass game and different formations that they can run the ball out of. They use some unconventional tactics as far as putting other people that normally run the ball in the backfield to do that. Gap integrity is key for us, and just making sure that everybody on our defense is in the right spot when they’re supposed to be there.”
(on playing in his hometown for the Super Bowl) “It’s hard to imagine this when I was younger growing up. I’ve always pictured myself playing in the Super Bowl and I’ve always pictured myself doing great things, but to be to do it at home is awesome.”
(on opportunity to play in the Super Bowl after missing first due to injury) “Just getting back out there was a big goal of mine, to stand out there on the field with the confetti coming down. I wanted to get back to the Super Bowl with this team, and we put in a lot of work and showed a lot of perseverance to get back here, and I want to be a part of this team.”
(on Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski’s impact) “He brings a lot of different things to their offense so we’ll plan for both scenarios and I know the coaching staff is hard working at that and we’ll let them do their job.”
(on the importance of getting to Brady) “I always say the keys to football are the same – stop the run and get to the quarterback. Maybe they don’t have as strong a run game as other teams do, but they are very effective passing the ball and that ball comes out quick. We rely on our DBs and we know they’ve been giving great coverage, but if we do our job up front and get to him it will make everybody’s job easier.”
(on how to get to Brady) “You beat the man across from you. The sack part of it is the easy part, but getting through those offensive linemen is what our job is and they are very effective as a group. Maybe individually (the Patriots offensive line) might not be the greatest athletes or have the greatest stars, but as a group they get the job done and that’s what we have to do, we have to beat them as a group.”
(on preparing for the Patriots offense) “You have to study as hard as you can before the game comes because they use a lot of formation shifts and changes that can throw you out of whack. Then after that it’s just play hard and play fast. This is the biggest game of the year. We know they are going to come out firing, but as long as we do those things leading up to the game everything will take care of itself.”
(on if the Giants can rattle Brady) “The fact of the matter is if you get to the quarterback enough, if you hit him hard enough it’s going to make him less effective. That is our job up front and that’s what we have to do… Really (pressure) effects every phase of the game because now you’ve got receivers that might not be sure about their routes because they are not sure if the ball is going to have to come out quicker, and it just throws the whole timing off.”
(on the Giants aggressive mentality up front) “Our defense has a great secondary and I think they get overlooked a lot. They give (the defensive line) a lot of time to get to the quarterback, and within that D-line room we all expect to get there first. That’s what we all strive to do.”
