Post-practice Press Conference – Wednesday – 9/14/2011
On going to Washington after getting their first victory at home:
“It’s going to be tough. They are a good team. I think they are pretty excited about what they have over there and their new transition. We are going to their place. We are going on an East Coast trip, and there are a lot of negatives packed up against us, but I think that’s pretty much our style. We like it that way, so it’s very important for us to go in there and play well and win.”
On if it helps that he has played Washington before:
“Somewhat, but they are going to change stuff up. Every team is evolving, every scheme is evolving. You can’t get too comfortable with it, but I do know a little bit of their personnel. I’m sure they will show us new stuff that we will have to adjust to during the game, but hopefully we will handle that with flying colors and clean up some of those details we missed this last week.”
On last week’s performance:
“A win is a good day. It doesn’t matter what you do. I think the mistakes we made were very simple when you go back, just slowing the game down and thinking about things. That’s going to come with time. It’s going to come with more games, and it’s something we can fix easily.”
On his ability to spread it around to different receivers:
“I think it’s just our offense. We all know Larry [Fitzgerald] draws a pretty big distraction out there. It’s important for me to make sure I can get it into the right guy’s hands, and we have a lot of guys who can do something with it after the catch just like we showed here just last Sunday.”
On how difficult it is to throw a screen pass:
“It doesn’t seem that way looking from the outside in, but screen passes, you have to commit yourself to them, and you have to run them day in and day out, because they take a special amount of timing. I think we have gotten a lot better just since I’ve been here, and they say since last year it’s even better than that. We were one player away from busting that last one for a big breaker, but that doesn’t excuse the one guy. So we will take care of that and hopefully next time we run one, we will get more production.”
On how game planning has been this week:
“It’s similar. Everything is pretty similar around the league. People know how it works. I like the way we do things. The little changes that we have here, I enjoy them and like them, and the best thing about this place is you get in here and you work your tail off. From the time you walk in to the time you leave, there is no wasted time and that is very important to the players.”
On going in to Sunday’s game as an underdog:
“I think we have an underdog role here anyways. That’s kind of our mentality. You stack that on top of going to the East Coast, playing in their house and them being 1-0 as well. It will be a tough feat, but we will handle it.”
On what challenges the Washington defense presents:
“Their front seven is legit. They are as good as anybody, and you throw in the different schemes that [Jim] Haslett likes to have. He’s an aggressive guy. He does some pretty unique things. It’s something different than anyone else does, so you have to make sure that you know what your conversions and route schemes are toward those things. It takes a different style of thinking, but we handled it great today and I know we will get better and better as the week goes on.”
On what stood out on offense in the film:
“I think just the playmaking ability. When we needed a play, we made it. It wasn’t like we had to dial up a play. That’s kind of an important thing on offense; that you don’t have to dial up a special gadget play in order to make one. We can make plays when it’s just a routine deal. We have athletes across the board and that’s encouraging. If we can continue to do that and just fix the easy things, then we can take it to the next level. That’s our focus right now.”
On Early Doucet making big plays on third down:
“About four days in, I knew Early [Doucet] was going to be that way. I told Chad Pennington in the production meeting, watch out for him. Early has a special feel for the game. He’s explosive. He’s been battered up and bruised a little bit. If we can keep him healthy, which I know we will, then he will have a great year.”
